Coffee Tables
Vintage, Industrial, Nordic, Art Deco & Mid Century Coffee Tables
This is an essential piece of furniture in every home, as it is located in the social area. It is the place where we receive any visitor; therefore, it can be said that it is our business card. It is where we showcase our home, our tastes, and trends. When buying furniture for a living room, the seating is usually the first thing chosen, and the choice of coffee tables is almost always left until last. But why is it left for last? Unconsciously, our mind relates the use of the coffee table as that final touch in any room. Coffee tables are characterised by being small, delicate pieces that complement the rest of the furniture. Generally, not many objects are placed on them—usually just a couple of photographs or an accessory that adds that final touch to the living room.
How to choose a coffee table
Choosing an ideal coffee table depends on three main factors:
- Customer taste. Without a doubt, this is the main factor, as although there are an infinite number of models to choose from, every person has their own particular taste. Therefore, focus on what catches your eye to avoid wasting time. Of course, take into account factors such as proportion and ensuring it matches the rest of the furniture in terms of model, colour, and material.
- Proportion of space. As with everything, there is a wide variety of models; however, coffee tables are typically low in height. There are oval, rectangular, or composite shapes... In short, it is important to consider the proportion and size of the space where it will be placed so that it does not hinder movement when people sit down. For this reason, it wouldn't make sense to place a large coffee table in a small space. On the other hand, a small coffee table in a large space is feasible depending on the interior design, but in this case, why limit yourself? If you have a large space... Make the most of it!
- The style of the rest of the furniture. This is very important, as this combination can enhance the beauty of a piece of furniture or overshadow it. It goes beyond choosing a coffee table of the same colour as the rest of the furniture; in fact, it doesn't have to be the same colour. Remember that it is a complementary piece of furniture rather than just a necessary one. Therefore, it can be different while still complementing what is already there. For example, if you have grey furniture, a red coffee table would work well. Why? Because grey is a cold, muted tone, while red is a warm colour that brings life; it should be used in these small details to avoid overwhelming the space. What better detail for this than a coffee table?
Other tips when choosing a coffee table
Nowadays, there is an immense variety of items, and coffee tables are certainly no exception. When searching for one, you will notice the huge range available on the market today in terms of materials, colours, proportions, and shapes. We have already mentioned relevant factors such as customer taste, proportion, and the style of the other furniture, but there are other details to consider, such as:
- The layout of the room. This is undoubtedly very important. Depending on how the rest of the furniture is organised, you can decide on the location and the ideal model for the coffee table. Generally, coffee tables are placed between the sofa and the TV. In this case, you must consider the distance between the sofa and the TV so the table does not obstruct the way. The minimum distance between the sofa and the table should be at least 50 cm, and the same applies to the distance between the table and the TV.
- The coffee table design. Since it is the smallest piece of furniture in the living room, it is important that it provides that special touch. Regardless of whether it is classic, modern, avant-garde, or minimalist, it should offer a touch of difference and originality. Remember that the coffee table is precisely the centre of the room, and visual attention will eventually fall upon it. For this reason, it is important to respect the prominence it naturally holds.
- Materials. This is certainly a relevant factor. Regarding coffee table materials, wood is an undisputed classic. You will find various models depending on individual taste, but there are also other types of materials such as glass, metal, aluminium, and plastic. Nowadays, materials for furniture have become increasingly diverse, and coffee tables are no exception. If you like classic yet bold trends, you can opt for a wooden table with a unique shape. If you prefer something more daring, you might choose a delicate glass piece.
